Ujjawal sees fabric like other raw materials that have its own character and nature, waiting to be explored. As a designer focused on his strain of process and method, he believes that clothing is one result; as he merely helps the material speak its own language.
Utilizing a keen sense of observation, respect for natural forms and an awareness that is always on lookout for unrehearsed moments of synchronicity, Ujjawal harnesses his instinctive knowing to create his post-new age X naturalist aesthetic.
Ujjawal won Best Upcoming Designer for Menswear at the Grazia Young Fashion Awards 2015. He was named as the '50 most influential young Indians by GQ India' and won the Elle Graduate Award in 2016. He was also named in the 30 under 30 list by the Forbes India magazine in 2017.
He was born in eastern Uttar Pradesh, in Gorakhpur. Ujjawal studied at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Kolkata and worked for 3.5 years at a prominent designer label before starting his label under the Gen Next category at Lakme Fashion Week in March 2014.
Antar-Agni is a perspective, one that focuses on two extremes, to break away and yet embrace the mundane. It bases itself on a restless curiousity to explore human nature through aesthetics and clothing.
With a fascination for architecture and strong belief in naturalism, the design philosophy builds its own breed of urban wear and updated classics that balance the contradictions of structure versus flow, natural forms versus tailored asymmetry and gender.
Antar-Agni is defined as: post-new age X naturalist.
